A myth. The causes of Diabetes mellitus include autoimmune factors, genetic inheritance, certain chemicals and some viral infections. Working in sugar mills does not trigger or pose any of these threats.
But, studies have brought to light that the occupational hazards of the sugar cane workers was linked to their substandard living conditions and the physical and psychological abuse and intimidation they suffered at the hands of the farm owners and their agents.
