Type 2 Diabetic…i am 19

I’m 19 years old and I found out I had Type 2 Diabetes. I was prescribed 500mg of Metformin, twice a day. For about the first 6 months I lost weight drastically, and now I have been putting in back on & I am now heavier than when I was diagnosed. I have tried losing the weight and eating healthy but have not had any luck. I also read that Metformin causes weight gain, is this true? Does anyone have any advice or personal experiences?

It’s not the Metformin that’s causing the weight gain, it’s actually a sign of better blood glucose. The first few months you were losing weight because your body wasn’t producing enough insulin to metabolize the sugar in your blood, and your cells were starving so they started munching on your fat cells to survive. As your BG improved with the meds, your weight will return to normal or even exceed your pre-diabetic weight.

Focus on lowering your carbs. Stay under 30-35g per meal, with one or two 15g snacks during the day. Don’t worry about fats at this point, just work on minimizing your potatoes, breads, pastas, sweets, sweetened drinks and fruits. Replace them with more lean meats, eggs, green veggies, cheese, nuts, and diet pudding and Jello. You’ll start noticing weight loss within a week or two. And this way of eating will make your blood glucose so much easier to control.
