What is wrong with my throat and what should I do?

My throat has been a little bit sore for two weeks, but it was very bearable. I got drunk on Saturday night and woke up the next morning with a very sore throat. I had a look, and behind my uvula, in the middle and very back of my throat is a white mess, it’s not like little circles or anything, just a chunk of goo that won’t go away. It’s very sore when I swallow, I’ve taken Panadol but it hasn’t seemed to work. I also have Difflam throat solution and spray.
What could this be? I had glandular fever a few months ago, but I don’t think it’s that this time.
Also, is there anything else I can do for it? Apart from going to a doctor, I couldn’t get an appointment today.
I have to work tomorrow, I’ll be in an environment with children, is this a bad idea (ie. is it contagious?)?

Definitely go and visit your doctor as soon as possible to discard any serious condition. Now, a short term good remedy that even doctors recommend is to heat up some water, add salt to it and do gargles with that water. You’ll feel a relief right away. It is said that the iodine in the salt kills bacteria that causes sore throats. The good thing is chances are you have salt right in your kitchen cabinet. Get well soon.
