How do doctors determine survival rate from surgery?
My best friend was in an out of the ER and is now back in. She has a very severe case of pneumonia. She was released a few days ago but went in again last night after she started coughing up blood and had lots of chest pain. Her cousin told me they have her in surgery right now and that she has a 40% survival rate. Its scary. How do they base such a %?

well there are statistics with general surgeries. example a coronary by-pass, the physician may use that for a general guide but, he will also take into account the patients age, and general health. if it’s a 40 year old versus a 80 old there will be consideration for that. so, it is what the surgeon says it is , a good estimate.
