How risky is oral sex?

Ok, my friend is in bits here because she is worried that she might have some kind of STD. A few nights ago she gave a guy a ********. She knows this guy and are almost close to dating, it just happened to be an intimate night. Someone told her you can get diseases through oral sex, but what are we talking about here? She swollowed… :S

She’s really worried. Can anyone give her any adivce??

Herpes , Syphilis and Gonorrhea can be transmitted through oral sex. So can Chlamydia, though it’s rare that those bacteria will infect a mouth. Herpes can be transmitted if the virus is re-emerging but has not yet resulted in sores. HIV is is very low risk and even then only under certain circumstances.

Now having said what the possibilities are, what are the probabilities and most important, the real situation? If she is judging the possibilities of him having any of those, hopefully she knows him well enough in the non-sexual department to make a good call. There are no guarantees of course but it would help her judge whether she should be concerned. If he is not infected of course, neither is she. Unfortunately symptoms of some of these are very mild or don’t show.

She needs to talk to him. Explain that before they every had any sexual contact they should have both talked about their sexual past and history. This is for his benefit as much as hers. When she has as many of the facts as she needs, then she can decide how much risk she put herself in… a lot, a little or none. (BTW, sometimes people lie about their past)
