Is there scientific evidence for gut feelings?
Is there scientific evidence for gut feelings?
Would you base your decision on whether to listen to or ignore gut feelings based on whether there was a lack of scientific evidence for this or would this not influence your decision.
Thankyou
Im not wanting any rants or drama on this question please.Thankyou:)
Also all-im not referring to any spiritual connection/assumption etc ,im talking purely about whether theres any objective scientific evidence for it or not & would you base your decision re: making decisions off gutfeeling based on scientific evidence or lack therof.
That they are all different words/concepts.
•Subconscious-Alot of evidence points to that the subconscious as a single “entity” does not exist.
•Sixthsense-a word that i associate more with new-age teachings, or psychic phenomena although some might associate this word with gut feelings.
•Emotionalism-i’d associate with soppiness.Think John Mayer or something similar.
•Fearbased/fear mongering-i think we all know what that means. The use of fear to sway a persons or communities opinion in a certain way.A ‘psychological” trick whether used intentionally or unintentionally.
Skepdoc-a rants a rant, stop trying to justify it.I’ve seen you “dish it out”/criticize other people eg :link below so we have to be able to receive what we give out.Take it as a gentle lesson to be more courteous + kinder + people will respond in turn.
You’ll win more respect & appreciation that way too when people see your charming side which im sure you have;)
RhiannaReturns-Im not sure if your understanding my question, perhaps i have put too much detail & its confused .Not referring to any “magic” connections or supernatural relation.Im also not referring to just any feeling which can be localised to the gut eg:fightorfight anxiety response/ “butterflies” but specifically whats termed gutfeelings(gutinstrinct,hunch)-somewhat related but different.

Gut feelings, hunches, your “sixth sense”….whatever you want to call it, is a very complex interaction of your past experience and biases, combined with subtle (subclinical) awareness of your usual 5 senses as well as the neuro-hormonal responses mentioned above. Much of this can be measured with various technologies in existence. There is no evidence that there is any supernatural or paranormal phenomena or energy in play when people make decisions based on their “gut instincts”.
Making decisions based on your gut feelings is something humans do all the time. We have evolved to make decisions based on minimal information, pattern recognition and past experience. Much of the time we are right….don’t go into that dark cave with a pile of fresh bones outside and growling coming from within. Often we are wrong when we rely on our guts when there may be rational evidence that would suggest a different response (ie…the emotional decision not to vaccinate your kids based on hysterical fear mongering from anti vax crusaders)
I prefer to make decision based on the best objective evidence available. If that’s not available, I will go with my gut.

Thanks but I think I answered your question quite directly and kept the rant to a minimum. One persons reasoned answer is another’s rant in any case. I don’t get to tell you how to ask a question…and you don’t get to tell me how to answer it. I’m not actually sure what you are trying to ask even on re-reading several times, so I’ll stick with my original answer.
But..to be concise, yes, there is scientific evidence to explain gut feelings and no, we shouldn’t base decisions solely on gut feelings but on the best available objective evidence.

One Response to “Is there scientific evidence for gut feelings?”I give you BA Skepdoc because although somewhat argumentative your answer was most factual re:”complex interaction of your past experience& biases co….”,you provided a balanced view of using objective evidence + G.F in conjunction & the mention that G.F can occasionally be wrong too.
Thankyou
