A whole bunch of questions on braces?

Posted by · Leave a Comment

I’m getting braces on Monday, and I’m freaking out.

Does it hurt? Is it hard to brush? Do I get rubber bands? Does THAT hurt? Am I gonna talk different? Will I look different?

also, they said they were gonna take out 4 of my teeth after a month or two, because apparently my mouth’s too crowded and that I should have gotten braces in junior high and now they’re gonna treat me like an adult and blah blah blah…and that’s scaring me too.

My friends have been freaking me out too, so I’m just about having a fit right now.

Also, (this is a little stupid) what color braces should I get? I hate pink and purple, and I heard that some colors make it look like you have food stuck in your teeth, or that you’re bleeding…

So I guess what I’m really asking is…are braces really that bad? I’m pretty sure they’re not, because half the people I know have braces and they’re fine…I think I’m just paranoid….

when I ask if I’ll look different, I don’t mean my teeth…I know THEY’RE gonna look different…I’m talking about my face. When my mouth is closed, will I look the same as without braces? or will my mouth look all swollen and weird?

I had braces for 3 years and for the last 2 years I’ve had removable retainers although I am about to get permanent retainers.

I was terrified of getting train-tracks but you needn’t worry, at first it took about 2 or 3 days to get used to but after that they weren’t uncomfortable at all and I actually think that they can look kind of trendy. I experimented with loads of different colours mostly blues and purples as well as blacks and whites at times and I’d just go with your favourite colour or whatever colour you wear the most of!

You probably wont talk any differently. At one point I had removable braces and for the first 2 days I spoke with a lisp but by the third day I sounded completely normal. You wont look noticeably different, it’s just that your teeth will be a bit more colourful! The worst part for me was having my teeth taken out but that was just because I didn’t like needles and after a few days of having two teeth removed I was no longer bothered by it at all and the pain only lasted about 10 minutes, literally.

Try not to worry, go into it as a positive experience and I reckon that you might well learn to like having braces – they’re not all that bad!

Good luck
