Went to dr today they had me sign pain contract why?
hello all. i am not understanding why the dr had me sign a pain contract for the 4 medicines i take. I take 80 mgs of bentyl for my stomach. 80 mgs is incredibly high dose many patients only take 40, but if i don’t i have sever accidents due to IBS. I also take tofrinil at night due to IBS. I started taking lorazapam about 2 1/2 yrs ago as needed for anxiety and unfortunately i have had a lot of it lately. then there is the hydrocodone.which i can understand why you would do that in a contract. the prescription is written take 2 every 4 hrs as needed for pain qty:40. i have multiple bone spurs in both feet with reoccurring neuromas between 3 of my toes. 40 pills last me more then 30 days. my last refill was christmas time. I am not abusing it in any way, having me sign this contract made me feel like they thought i was a junkie or something. it said something like i can not fill any prescriptions by any other dr. for any of those medications. which is fine, but what do i do when i have surgery the middle of march on my feet again, do i tell someone that i have this “contract”. Im confused

They have anyone on pain meds sign a contract just so they have documentation that you are aware of the risks and that you know how much to take. They aren’t saying you’re a junkie. Let’s say you take 2 times your dose and then fall and hit your head. Some people would use that as a chance to sue the Dr and claim that the dr. prescribed too much medication. If the dr office has this contract, it releases him from liability. It’s more of a legal than personal thing. When you have your surgery, mention this contract in your pre-surg checkup or to your surgeon ahead of time. If they want you on additional meds they will have to ammend the contract with your primary care physician.
