I Still have abnormal cells AFTER my complete hysterectomy?
I had a hysterectomy almost 20 years ago. however a piece of the cervix was left behind..my pap smear came back with slight abnormal cells the doctor removed that piece of cervix in September 2009 he did another pap smear in Dec.09 and the cells came back abnormal Again.
So now what? Chemo? Radiation? remove the vagina?
I do have an appointment with the gyenocologist, He will go over my test with me.. I just got the call today to make an appointment..

Usually they use laser ablation in your vagina to destroy the abnormal cells. It basically just kills off the top layer of skin. It’s not as bad as it sounds . . . and you’re asleep of course and your skin just replaces itself so you go back to being 100% okay. The next step *might* be a partial vaginectomy if this returns, which again sounds absolutely horrid, but usually it’s okay if they are just removing small areas of tissue in the upper vagina. Women who have a radical hysterectomy have the top bit of their vagina removed all the time. The vagina is very stretchy and most women report that their vagina is just fine afterward.
Wow, I don’t know if this answer is all that reassuring when dealing with this scary topic! Or course even the word “vaginectomy” is pretty scary. Sorry.
You might want to consider going to a gynecologis oncolgist. They would be much more experienced dealing with these types of issues than a regular gyn and could tell you the path forward and what is the liklihood that you would need additional procedures.
